Clear Sucks! – User Submission by David J.

September 7th, 2010 | by Admin |

At our local mall there was a Clear kiosk. They offered to let me use a receiver/modem (WiMax) for 48 hours free. I took it because my AT&T DSL was out more than it was in. I hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised that it connected so fast. I did some speed tests and found I was blazing along a 300-700 Kbps! So I went to their web site, and found all of my browsers had been hijacked to only go to their site. I did not have an account, but it took over anyway. Clear seems too much like the government today – intruding too much into my PC! I can’t return the receiver soon enough!

I used to work for a call center that is in contract with Clear. What you experienced is called a VLAN. When a customer has a past due balance the Clear server picks up your modem by it’s MAC ID and captures it to direct you to their website, prompting you for payment. This also happens when the company wants to encourage you to purchase a new service or renew your contract. the problem is modems are being captured for no reason and even level 1 technicians are unable to get you out of VLAN. Over my last few weeks of employment I had several calls on a daily basis from customers being directed to this page, some of which had been unable to browse the internet for weeks at a time. The company wants to turn a profit selling a service that isn’t functioning properly, and they will tell the customer whatever necessary to avoid spending money to fix the problems. You were smart to return the modem and not enter into a contract with them.
