Completely unreliable service; Shared bandwidth = Incredibly slow Internet access – User Submission by Bruce K.

April 24th, 2009 | by Admin |

I’m in an executive suite, and Clearwire is provided to tenants for Internet access. Clearwire is an unacceptable Internet provider. Clearwire has two major drawbacks: 1) wireless transmission is easily interrupted; and, 2) it is a shared bandwidth product.

The modem in my office ranges from 2 bars, to 5 bars throughout the day, resulting is dropped data packets. The signal is apparently getting interrupted from traffic. Large trucks and buses eat the signal. Once I had zero coverage because Puget Sound Energy was replacing a power pole some 40 years aways, and the crane that they were using ate all the signal.

Clearwire is a shared bandwidth product. If I work on the weekend, I can get 2M bit/sec download, which is great. After about 9:00AM M-F the download rate is about 0.1-0.2, because the 2M bandwidth is shared between about 20 users in my office building and adjacent buildings.

Then there is the latency issue. My T-Mobile phone has the ability to make calls over the Internet. At home, this system works great over a DSL connection. It doesn’t work at all with Clearwire. Clearwire is so late delivering data packets, the voice of the person I’m talking with completely cuts out.

I am so glad I never purchased any Clearwire stock. They have a bad business model. Because of the shared bandwidth, the more popular they get, the worse they perform. There is no easy solution for them. Their wireless technology isn’t cheap. Worse, Clearwire is on a collision course with the 3G providers.

BTW: I’m planning on moving my office. Clearwire is the number one reason for me moving.
