Charged for modem they said “not received” AND 9 months of monthly fees – User Submission by Hank W.
December 5th, 2008 | by Admin |I contected Clearwire in March (I believe) of 2008 to cancel the service. They emailed me a label, and I did not get around to sending until April. They say they can’t find it. I called in May to find out why my mother’s account wa still being charged the $38/month. They said they still had not received the modem. I go merrily on my way because my mother hadn’t said anything else. Apparently in Oct she balanced her checkbook, and found the were still charging her. In early Nov I called, they indeed noted that the modem had not been used since April, but it had still not arrived, and that they will continue to charge me the monthly fees until the modem was returned. In my world, that’s stealing. Theft. Whatever you want to call it. So I asked what a modem costs, they tell me $200. I said, “Fine. Take the $200 off all the month’s you have charged me erroneously (and it’s clear the modem has not been used), and refund the balance. OHHHHH NOOOOOO I am told today. Now they charged me another month after my call in Nov, but will only go back 3 months to credit (which is the policy – but I asked if that was in there terms of service), so to get them to stop ripping me off I still had to pay $100 today (I think that may technically be extortion!). They said that since I was getting emails of the bills (WHICH WENT TO THE CLEARWIRE ACCOUNT THAT I DIDN”T THINK I STILL HAD), I really only had x number of days (per the terms of service) after receiving the bill to dispute a bill so it’s all my fault for not doing it sooner, and the supervisor was being very generous with me – in her opinion. The round in circles thing. In my world, I never received those bills, so the number of days to dispute had not started clicking off.
Aside from the “Rip you off at all costs” mentality, the service generally sucks and is spotty at best. Of course the answer was always to move to a different place in my house, not matter if it’s convenient or not. And forget any service if there was a storm and there were tree branches blowing around outside. I would never, ever recommend this company for anything. I will be consulting my attorney, the State of Florida, and find our what kind of recourse I may have. I imagine there isn’t a lot I can do, but I damn sure need to try.
To those who consider Clearwire, don’t even bother reading the terms of service – DON’T SIGN UP PERIOD!

Thanks for this heads up. I’m canceling today and wanted to know about any potential problems as I know this is a predatory company. I’m going send this using my own money, via certified mail so they can’t say they didn’t get it.
